A space heater is a portable yet powerful heating option that will quickly warm up any smaller indoor area. Space heaters can also be used in workshops, garages or when decorating – they’re particularly useful in areas which aren’t warmed by a central heating system.

What’s the difference between an electric space heater and a gas space heater?

Electric space heaters run on electricity, are usually safer to install and are common for indoor use.

Gas space heaters run on natural gas or LPG, generate heat by burning fuel, and often need ventilation or a flue, plus suitable safety controls (oxygen depletion sensor, flame failure, etc.).

Electric models are usually easier to plug in or wire, whereas gas models may require a gas line, venting, and professional installation.

What are the benefits of using a space heater?

Compact and discreet
Fast warm-up
More efficient for small spaces or spot heating
Thermostat control, timers, etc.
Easier installation vs wet heating in many cases

What safety guidelines should I follow when using an indoor space heater?

Follow these key guidelines:

Place the heater on a level, stable, non-combustible surface.
Keep clearances around the heater - avoid walls, furniture, curtains and other combustible materials.
Plug electric heaters directly into a wall socket (avoid extension leads or overloaded power strips).
Ensure gas space heaters have proper ventilation or flueing as required by the manufacturer.
Keep the heater free from obstructions so air can circulate safely.
Test built-in safety features like tip-over protection and overheat cut-out regularly.
Inspect the power cord or gas connection routinely for wear or damage.
