Choose the right wall light for your space

Consider the following elements when deciding on a wall light for your home:

Brightness & beam direction: Decide whether you need uplight, downlight, or both. Check lumen output to match room size.
Mounting & wiring options: For new builds, wired units allow clean installation. For retrofit or where wiring is awkward, plug-in models save time.
Wall material & fixings: Brick, plasterboard, masonry – choose correct fixings (rawlplugs, wall anchors).
Design & finish: Choose a style and finish (brass, chrome, matte black) to match décor.
IP & location: If used in bathrooms or damp areas, ensure the IP rating suits the zone.
Control & dimming: Check whether fitting is dimmable, compatible with your switch type, and wiring supports it.

What mounting and fitting considerations should I check before installing a wall light?

First check the wall surface (brick, plasterboard, etc). Confirm the electrical supply point and whether the fitting is suitable (voltage, driver, dimmable if needed). Ensure the back-box or fixing is secure and rated for the load. For internal wall lights, a standard IP20 rating is acceptable in dry areas; if the location is subject to damp or splash (e.g., above a sink) you may need a higher rating.

What common mistakes should I avoid when installing wall lights?

Avoid mounting too high or too low (which can cause glare or shadows). Don't use a fitting not rated for the environment (e.g., use IP20 in a damp utility). Avoid inadequate fixings (wall-plugs/screws not suitable for the wall type). Ensure the fitting’s weight is supported and all cable work is done safely, following the wiring regulations.
