Frequently Asked Questions | FAQs

Is cast iron outdoor hardware weather-resistant?

Yes. Old Hill Ironworks products are manufactured from heavy-duty cast iron and finished with a durable, UV-resistant coating. This antique black finish is specifically designed to protect the underlying metal from rust, corrosion, and harsh outdoor environments, ensuring your hinges and bolts look great year-round.

What size tee hinge do I need for a garden gate?

As a general rule of thumb, a tee hinge should reach across roughly one-third to one-half of the gate's total width to provide adequate support and prevent the timber from sagging. For a standard 900mm (3ft) wide pedestrian garden gate, a pair of 305mm (12") or 390mm (15") Tudor tee hinges is usually the ideal choice.

What does "Euro Lock" mean on the door handles?

A "Euro Lock" handle backplate (such as those in the Burford or Laverton suites) features an oversized, specifically shaped keyhole cut-out designed to fit around a Euro cylinder lock. This setup is commonly used on modern, high-security exterior doors, allowing the cylinder profile to sit perfectly flush within the traditional cast iron backplate.
