If you’re planning on carrying out any rewiring jobs around your home, it’s important to understand what the different colour wires mean, and why it matters. The colour of UK wiring helps to identify whether each wire is live, earth, or neutral. Electrical work can be dangerous, so if you're unsure at any stage or the work goes beyond basic maintenance, always consult a qualified electrician.
However, wiring colours have changed over the years, meaning older properties may contain different colour combinations to those used in modern electrical installations. It's also possible to encounter both old and new wiring colours in the same property following extensions or partial rewires.

Current UK Wiring Colour Standards
The current UK wiring colour system allows you to identify the function of each conductor within an electrical circuit. Since 2006, new electrical installations have followed harmonised colour standards, and these align across much of Europe. This makes it easier for electricians and manufacturers to work with consistent wiring systems.
Although wire colours provide a useful visual guide, you should never rely on them as the sole method of identification. With that in mind, always isolate the power supply and use suitable electrical testing equipment before carrying out any electrical work. Single Phase UK Wiring Colours
Brown - Live Wire
The brown wire is the live conductor. It carries electrical current from the power supply to an appliance, light fitting or electrical accessory, making it the wire that presents the greatest risk of electric shock if handled incorrectly.
Live wires are usually connected to terminals marked L and should only be worked on once the circuit has been safely isolated and confirmed to be dead.
Blue - Neutral Wire
The blue wire is the neutral conductor, providing the return path for electrical current back to the supply after it’s passed through the circuit.
Neutral wires are usually connected to terminals marked N. While they don’t normally carry the same voltage as a live conductor, they should always be treated as potentially live until the circuit has been properly tested.
Green & Yellow - Earth Wire
The green and yellow wire is the protective earth conductor, sometimes known as the ground wire. Unlike the live and neutral wires, it doesn’t usually carry current during everyday operation.
It’s there for safety reasons and provides a safe path for fault current if an electrical fault develops, helping protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers to disconnect from the supply quickly, reducing the risk of electric shock.
Three-Phase Wiring Colours
Typically, UK homes use a single-phase electrical supply. However, when a higher power load is required, three-phase wiring can be found in commercial buildings, industrial premises and some larger domestic properties with high electrical demand.

UK Wiring Colours Prior to 2006
Not every property in the UK uses the current brown and blue wiring colours. If your home was built or last rewired before the introduction of the harmonised colour standards, you may still encounter the previous wiring colour system.
This is perfectly normal and doesn't automatically indicate that your electrical installation is unsafe. Many older wiring systems continue to provide reliable service, provided they have been installed correctly, remain in good condition, and have been properly maintained.

*Older installations may occasionally feature a plain green earth conductor, although this colour hasn’t been used in modern installations for many years.

Why Are Older Wiring Colours Still Found?
Electrical wiring is designed to last for decades, so it's common for homes built before the introduction of the current colour standards to retain their original wiring.
You may also come across both old and new wiring colours within the same property. This sometimes happens when an extension has been added, part of the property has been rewired, or electrical circuits have been upgraded while the existing wiring remains in place.
For this reason, it's important not to assume that every cable in your home will follow the same colour coding.
Does Old Wiring Need Replacing?
Older wiring colours don’t necessarily mean the wiring itself needs replacing. The colour of the insulation simply reflects the standards that were in place when the installation was carried out.

Why UK Wiring Colours Changed

Before the change, the UK used its own unique wiring colours. While these colours were familiar to British electricians, they differed from those used elsewhere in Europe, increasing the potential for confusion when working with imported equipment or on multinational electrical installations.
By adopting harmonised wiring colours, electricians, manufacturers and installers now work with a more consistent system that reduces the likelihood of wiring mistakes. It also makes electrical products easier to design for international markets.

Why Your Property May Have Mixed Wiring Colours
If you've discovered both old and new wiring colours within your home, there's usually no need for immediate concern. Mixed wiring colours are extremely common in UK properties and are often the result of electrical work being carried out at different times over the life of the property.

Incorrectly connected conductors, reused cables or poorly labelled wiring can all make it difficult to identify the purpose of each wire based on colour alone.
Older Installations

Switched Live Conductors

For example, a blue conductor may sometimes be used as a switched live rather than a neutral. Protective sleeving is used to clearly identify certain conductors, particularly earth wires and switched live conductors.
